The problem appears multiple times per hole throughout a round: you pull a driver, fairway wood, or putter, the headcover comes off, and suddenly you're holding a piece of fabric with nowhere logical to put it. Stuff it onto the top of the bag. Throw it in the cart. Toss it on the ground. Every solution is a micro-annoyance that adds up over 18 holes.
I've been dealing with this my entire golf life — since I was eight years old, when my grandfather set me up with my first club, a cut-down Spalding 2½ wood. I've spent decades playing and competing in the game, having played as low as a 2 handicap and still competing in local and senior tournaments today.
Like a lot of golfers, my biggest challenge isn't ability — it's focus. Golf is a game of details and repetition. When your routine is sharp, the game follows. When it breaks down, everything leaks. And one thing I've learned: the next routine starts the moment the last shot ends.
The Moment Everything Changed
CoverStick started the way most good golf ideas do: by paying attention. While watching a professional tournament on TV, I noticed a tour caddie slip a putter headcover onto an alignment stick already in his pro's bag. Clean. Dry. Organized. Simple — but only possible with a tour bag.
That's when the question hit: Why should only tour players get tour-level solutions?
The headcover market has changed dramatically in recent years. Custom boutique companies now produce premium covers at $100 or more each — meaning golfers routinely carry $300–$400 worth of headcovers on their bags. But nobody had solved where those covers go during play. That gap became the product.
From Concept to Reality
I started in my Belchertown, Massachusetts workshop with a Bambu 3D printer. I'm not new to small-batch manufacturing — I co-run a soft fishing lure business with my brother — but golf presented different demands. Premium feel. Consistent finish. The kind of quality that holds up next to a $600 driver.
The hardware had to be precise: an 8.5-inch alignment stick, components printed from temperature, UV, and impact-resistant PETG, and internal wheel weights for solid, intentional heft. The print pattern on the block's visible surface stays — it's not trying to fake injection molding. It's engineered, refined, and purpose-built.
The flagship "Hero" colorway runs red, white, and blue — a non-negotiable brand identity from day one. Units are assembled with printed blocks, clips, and faceplates, with a 30-unit minimum for wholesale accounts at local courses.
The Validation
Early testing revealed something unexpected: enthusiastic testers kept giving their units away. I'd send out samples and within a week get requests for more — not because the original failed, but because the tester had given it to a playing partner who wanted one immediately.
That told me the product speaks for itself.
One of those early adopters was Frank Schwindel, former Chicago Cubs first baseman. His custom CoverStick features white with blue pinstripes and "Frank the Tank" lettering. His take: "Awesome product! Using it for my driver and putter headcovers every hole. Have had many playing partners ask about it when they see it on the bag."
Creating a New Golf Bag Accessory Category
This is a brand-new product category. While a couple of other makers produce similar items, none has built a brandable, customizable platform. CoverStick's modular design — separate faceplate, block, clip, stick, and cap — allows for virtually unlimited personalization.
Course logos, member names, personal colorways, tournament editions — the platform supports all of it without retooling. Every pro shop wants something unique for their display. CoverStick delivers that without a custom manufacturing run each time.
Why It Works
"It's right there all the time" is how I describe it to golfers. You pull your club, slide the headcover onto the CoverStick, hit your shot, grab it on the way back. No searching. No cart basket. No wet ground. It keeps your pre-shot and post-shot routine completely consistent — which, if you've played this game long enough, is worth more than most accessories you'll ever buy.
Most golf bag accessories are afterthoughts. Impulse buys near the register. This is different — it's something you use every round, every hole, that genuinely solves a real annoyance.
Building the Brand
The long-term vision extends beyond a single product. CoverStick is the foundation for a small line of thoughtful, problem-solving golf accessories — built for golfers who care about their setup and their routine. Green grass accounts first, then selective expansion.
That's why the details matter at every level: the packaging, the finish, the weight in your hand. Nothing ships unless it matches the precision of the product itself.
For now, the printers keep running, the pro shop conversations continue, and somewhere on a course in Massachusetts, a growing number of golfers are playing rounds where their headcovers stay exactly where they're supposed to — elevated, accessible, and finally solved.
